What is Somatic Counseling?
Healing Through Body Awareness & Nervous System Care.
Somatic counseling is a gentle, body-centered approach to healing that recognizes the deep connection between your mind and body. Unlike traditional talk therapy alone, somatic work helps you tune into the wisdom of your body to process emotions, reduce anxiety, and find relief from overwhelm.
This approach understands that our earliest relationships—and all our relational experiences—are stored in our bodies. The way we learned to connect (or protect ourselves) in relationships and in society gets wired into our nervous system, affecting how we feel about ourselves and others today.
Trauma-Informed Social Justice & Nervous System Focused
I use a trauma-informed, multicultural, and social justice approach because trauma lives in the body, not just the mind. Trauma is often caused by the cultural and institutional positions we hold in society—we are products of our environments. Bias and socialization can cause us to take on ideas and values that aren’t truly authentic to ourselves.
When difficult experiences happen, your nervous system can get stuck in survival mode—leading to anxiety, overwhelm, depression, or feeling disconnected from yourself.
How Your Nervous System Works
Your nervous system has different states:
- Safe & Social: When you feel calm, connected, and able to think clearly
- Fight/ Flight/Fawn: When you feel anxious, angry, or need to take action
- Freeze/Shut Down: When you feel numb, disconnected, or extremely tired
Somatic counseling helps your nervous system learn it’s safe to relax and return to that calm, connected state more easily. Somatic work is about gentle awareness, not physical manipulation.
