What is AcuDetox?
AcuDetox is a simple, powerful form of auricular (ear) acupuncture that uses five specific points on each ear to support healing and recovery. This protocol emerged from revolutionary community organizing in the South Bronx and has been refined over decades of use worldwide.
Traditionally, during in-person treatment, you sit quietly in a group setting while thin, sterile needles are placed in five points on each ear. The session lasts 30-45 minutes in a peaceful, supportive environment. No talking is required – just rest and let your body do what it needs to do.
Offerings
I am excited to offer AcuDetox sessions for those who can join in person for individual counseling sessions or group offerings. This gentle, community-based healing practice creates a space for collective restoration and individual healing.
If you’re interested in bringing AcuDetox to your community event, organization, or group, please reach out. I’m happy to discuss how we can create healing spaces together.
You can also access AcuDetox in our community through Boulder AcuDetox at boulderacudetox.org – a free and or donation-based resource for experiencing this powerful healing practice. There are several offerings weekly with multiple locations throughout the Boulder area.

Each needle point serves a specific purpose:
- Sympathetic – Calms the nervous system

- Liver – Aids in detox and helps with anger and frustration
- Lung – Assists with letting go and grief processing

Born from Revolutionary Community Care
AcuDetox’s origins are deeply rooted in social justice activism and community self-determination. In 1970, Lincoln Detox was founded by revolutionary activists, including members of the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords, and the Republic of New Afrika at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx.
Dr. Mutulu Shakur was introduced to acupuncture by Asian activists from I Wor Kuen while seeking alternative treatment for his children, who were critically injured in an accident. Witnessing the healing of his children and learning how acupuncture was being used in China by revolutionaries to combat imperialist-imposed opium addiction, he saw how it could be applied to combat the US government’s genocidal War on Drugs in the Black community.
In 1970, Mutulu was employed by the Lincoln Detox Community Program as a political education instructor. His role evolved to include counseling and treatment of withdrawal symptoms with acupuncture. What emerged was the first acupuncture detoxification program in America in 1973 – a collaborative creation by revolutionary activists who understood that their communities needed healing alternatives to the punitive systems that were destroying them.
This wasn’t just medical innovation – it was revolutionary community care in action. When marginalized communities were being targeted by both addiction and mass incarceration, these activists created their own solutions rooted in healing rather than punishment.
Community Healing Philosophy
AcuDetox maintains its roots in community-centered care. The protocol emphasizes:
- Accessibility – Low-cost, non-pharmaceutical healing
- Non-judgmental support – Meeting people exactly where they are
- Group healing – Creating community through shared experience
- Empowerment – Supporting people’s own natural healing abilities
- Cultural humility – Honoring diverse healing traditions
Why It Matters Today
Modern AcuDetox training includes “the social justice history behind the 5NP” and is “grounded in the principles of trauma-informed care and harm reduction”. This history reminds us that some of our most effective healing tools came from communities fighting for their lives and dignity.
AcuDetox represents more than just a treatment – it’s a model of how marginalized communities can create their own solutions when the system fails them. Today, it continues to offer hope and healing to anyone seeking a gentle, community-based approach to wellness and recovery.
Whether you’re dealing with addiction, anxiety, trauma, or simply need support navigating life’s challenges, AcuDetox provides a quiet space to rest, reset, and remember your own capacity for healing.
